I’m no bodybuilder but I do know how to build businesses.
And as with bodybuilding, there’s both a right and wrong way to build a business (practice).
Actually, the mindset, values, and action steps needed to succeed at both bodybuilding and practice building are very similar…
1. Quality growth doesn’t happen overnight – Sure, you can take steroids or come up with a wildly enticing offer on Facebook but over time, it is unhealthy and unscalable.
2. If you’re not balanced, you are wasting your time – Big chest and biceps, no legs or calves. You see that all the time. Chiropractors make similar blunders. They focus on new patients but not enough on referrals and reactivation. Relationships, Relevance, and Reputation are the Lunges, Squats, and Calf Raises of Chiropractic.
3. You can look like an idiot – Bodybuilders prancing around with a gallon of water, wearing tight shirts, eating, sleeping, and breathing their passion. Nobody cares and it’s annoying. Again, it’s no different than D.C.s who eat, sleep, and breathe Chiropractic, carry around dry spine key chains, and reek of Chiropractic as if it is their cologne of choice… worn too strong, too often.
4. The only attendees to “the show” are raving fans who are or want to be just like you. – Have you ever been to a bodybuilding show? Have you noticed who attends these shows? Yep, more bodybuilders. They are the attraction and they are the attendees. (Or they are mommy, daddy, boyfriend, girlfriend, family, etc..) Chiropractic is no different so be careful what message you bring to your community and your patients because what they want isn’t what you want.
5. All you really need are the fundamentals – To build a body that lasts, you need good food, plenty of rest, and repetitive resistance. In Chiropractic, you need competence, ethics, and consistent and relevant communication to your community and your list (Past and Current Patients).
Why do you do what you do? Does anyone really care or is it all about you?
What are the long-term ramifications of your actions? Are you doing more harm than good?
Listen, the Chiropractic industry is a lot like Bodybuilding. There is a lot of junk out there and a lot of bozos who will do and say anything to make a buck.
Don’t be that guy or gal.
All that matters is that you do the right things for your community, for your patients, for your family, for your reputation, and for the reputation of this profession.
We are all in this together.
